Early Learners: The Merit School of Prince William

A private preschool in Dale City offers young children a diverse education.

From computer programs to Spanish classes, the preschool through second grade students at the  get a varied education early on. The school held an open house Friday for families with young children interested in the programs offered.

The Merit School hosts a slew of different programs that teach young children fundamental skills.  Reading, social studies, math, science, and music aren’t the only programs being taught; four specialists are invited to teach Spanish, computers, and “rizumu,” a Japanese form of exercise. The computer classes teach students to use Scholastic Keys, a children’s version of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This translates into children who are embedded with basic educational necessities and a multicultural education.

Around the large playground are two different basketball courts, a large sandlot, swings and several different climbable things children can hang, frolic, or play around. The larger basketball court is equipped with padding in case a child falls during play. The area is especially beautiful during spring and summer when all the trees are alive, the ensuing forest shading the area below and flushing everything green.

Just behind the playground, a garden is kept in memory of "Mr. John," a beloved bus driver who passed away suddenly almost 20 years ago. Family-type relationships are important at the small private school for preschool through second grade tucked in the trees along Spriggs Road.

Beyond everything else, the faculty leaves the biggest footprint. Ranging between 35 to 6 years of teaching experience, most have bachelors and masters degrees, along with a parent-like warmth that radiates from each teacher.
