How to Fry a Turkey Safely

Firefighters respond to some 155,000 cooking fires each year.

Frying a turkey may result in a jucier turkey than traditional preparation methods, but firefighters say don't put your taste for turkey over safety and sensibility. More than 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires are reported each year, causing an average of $21 million in property damage and five deaths, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Some of those fires start when a turkey fryer is misused or left unattended, firefighters said. Leaving cooking food unattended and falling asleep while cooking is a main cause of kitchen fires. Community Connections

A Cornucopia

What are you grateful for?

I love social media! I stop in at Facebook at least twice a day just to see what everyone is doing. Friends and family post pictures and jokes, links to news items, updates, their joys and successes and their woes and ills. I could never keep up with everyone if not for Facebook. So, I am grateful for social media, the web and the technology that makes it possible. I’m grateful for the electricity that hums through the wires to bring me everything from my computer to my toothbrush. I’m grateful for clean, fresh water to drink or wash my hair any time I want. I’m grateful for the heating and air conditioning that makes our lives so much easier and the appliances like washing machines and microwave ovens that do the same. At age 58, I am …

We should all be grateful that a state delegate takes time to comment and communicate on a regular basis. Patch readers may think this is common, but I assure you it is not. Delegate Anderson is one of a kind and I definitely appreciate the support given to our community.\!   more ›
