Standing up for Seniors

Brenda Kelley Nelum was invited to speak alongside Rep. Nancy Pelosi last month to recognize the 46th anniversary of Medicare.

Brenda Kelley Nelum was raised by her grandmother and now, at 68, she has spent decades advocating on behalf of the elderly. Nelum was a speaker at a press conference in late July held by U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi recognizing the 46th anniversary of Medicare. Pelosi herself introduced Nelum, who spoke about her own experience with Medicare and how it had paid for medical bills that she and her husband would not have been able to afford. Nelum said that with talk flying about cutting Medicare, she wanted to speak up on behalf of the good the program had done. “I just thought the public should know that this was the anniversary of a program that, as far as I can see, has been a success,” Nelum said. “If we …

Gerry Connolly Attends DCCA Meeting

Editor's note: Connie Moser is president of the Dale City Civic Association. Last night’s DCCA meeting was lively and informative, thanks to our Congressional Representative, Gerry Connolly. The congressman recapped his dedication to the citizens of Prince William County and spoke on numerous timely issues. Connolly addressed Base Realignment and Closure and the effects we will and are feeling with the largest military impact in the world at Belvoir and Quantico adding 24,000 new jobs to our area. The congressman remarked with some irony, “Any place else in the United States, the announcement of 24,000 jobs would be feted with champagne. I am glad see you are looking at getting the Subway into Prince William County and I know it will be some time before it happen. We have a lot of residents suffering now because there isn't any bus service at all on Sundays and nothing going into Springfield on Saturadays or Sundays. People have to spend between forty five and fifty dollars to catch a cab to go to and return back home from work …   more ›
