The Department of Defense has extended the deadline for veterans and service members to apply for retroactive "stop loss pay" to Oct. 21.
Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th) announced Tuesday that the Department of Defense has extended the deadline for veterans and service members to apply for retroactive "stop loss pay" to Oct. 21. “The debt we owe to our veterans is impossible to pay but as a nation we must do our best to try,” Connolly said in a news release distributed Tuesday. “These brave men and women never wavered when we called on them to extend their service. This extension is critically important to ensure that every service member owed back pay is compensated.” Members of the military, along with their beneficiaries, whose service was involuntarily extended under stop loss between Sept. 11, 2001 and Sept. 30, 2009, are eligible for the retroactive payments. The Congressman will visit McAuliffe Elementary School on Friday for "Read Across America."
Congressman Gerry Connolly will visit kindergarten students in Dale City Friday morning to read to them. Connolly will be at McAuliffe Elementary School to participate in "Read Across America" in recognition of the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Connolly will be reading his own favorite book by Dr. Seuss, "Green Eggs and Ham." "The kids are quick to correct me if I get something wrong," Connolly said. "It’s a lot of pressure, but it’s worth it if it gets students more interested in reading." Connolly will be visiting the school from 10:45 a.m. to 11:15 p.m. It will be his 18th time to participate in "Read Across America," and the fourth year in a row that he has taken part in Prince William County's celebration of the event. Rep. Gerry Connolly joined other Virginia Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday to ask Gov. Bob McDonnell to voice opposition to a package of bills in Congress that Connolly says would cut millions of dollars of federal funding for public transit in Virginia. Connolly, along with Reps. Jim Moran and Bobby Scott, sent a letter to McDonnell Wednesday, criticizing a package of transportation-related bills in Congress scheduled to come up for a vote this week. The American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act would approve $260 billion in federal transportation programs over the next five years.
