Lake Ridge Lancers Registration Still Open

Register for the 2013 summer season.

The Lake Ridge Lancers 2013 summer season registration is still open. The season runs from May 28 through July 27. Swimmers can join either the main competitive team or the Lil' Lancers. Lil' Lancers is a five-week program where young swimmers can develop competitive swimming skills. To join the main team, you must be able to swim both 25 meters of freestyle with good side breathing and 25 meters of backstroke.  The Lancers almost had to scramble to find a new home for the team this season. After winning the 2012 White Division Championship, the Lancers were told that the Lake Ridge Community Swim Club would no longer be hosting the team. The ensuing outcry led to several weeks of negotiations, and the swim club eventually invited the team…

Ridgewood Barracudas Swim Registration Open

The season starts late May.

The Ridgewood Barracudas are still accepting registrations for the 2013 swim team season this summer, according to spokesperson Randy Cooper.  "Unlike years past, we're holding an open registration through our website," Cooper said.  The season begins the last week of May and runs through the end of July. The Ridgewood Barracudas accept swimmers of varying skill levels. Beginning swimmers can swim in Take Your Mark, and young intermediate swimmers can compete in Lil 'Cudas. Finally, the Ridgewood Barracudas is also the name of the main competitive team. Anyone between the ages of 4 and 18 can swim in one of the three programs, provided they don't turn 19 before June 1. Breaking: Two Dead in Boston Marathon Explosion

More than 100 people injured near finish line in large annual event. Five Woodbridge runners participated in the event.

Two people are dead and more than 100 people were injured Monday in an explosion at the Boston Marathon, according to live reports from CNN. The Patriot-Ledger is reporting two booms were heard from inside the Fairmount Copley Hotel near the finish line on Boylston Street. There are also reports of multiple serious injuries, but no word yet on whether those injured were spectators or runners.  This is a breaking news story and this post will be updated as information is available. Final Score: Potomac Nationals Struggle at Plate Against Salem Red Sox

Robbie Ray has strong start in Wednesday afternoon's rubber match at Pfitzner Stadium.

Release, Potomac Nationals: Woodbridge, VA—The Potomac Nationals (2-4, 2-4) hosted Middle School Science Day on Wednesday afternoon during a rubber match contest with the visiting Salem Red Sox (2-4, 2-4) at Pfitzner Stadium. Despite the raucous crowd filled with screaming youngsters, the amped atmosphere was not enough to rally the P-Nats as the home club was stifled for just a pair of runs and were downed by a final score of 7-2. LHP Robbie Ray (1-1), the eventual tough luck losing pitcher, tossed a quality start going 6.0 innings in which he allowed three runs, only two earned, on five hits, while striking out seven.  After four innings of scoreless baseball, Salem struck first with three runs in the 5th inning courtesy of a David …

Potomac Nationals To Reveal New Uncle Slam at Wegmans

Popular mascot gets makeover for 2013 season.

The Potomac Nationals will be revealing a new look for its official mascot on Saturday, Feb. 16. Uncle Slam was reportedly "injured" in the June fire at the Nationals' administration office.  The P-Nats have been teasing the makeover this week on social media and will make the public unveiling Saturday at Wegmans in Stonebridge at Potomac Town Center. "Slam has been waiting all off-season to reunite with our fans and looks forward to his best season to date!" says P-Nats Vice President and General Manager, Josh Olerud. The event Saturday will run from noon until 2 p.m. Uncle Slam is expected to arrive at 12:30 p.m. to meet with fans and sign autographs. Uncle Slam's bounce house and a coloring station will also be set up.

The Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers face off in Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday. Here's some information for getting the most out of the game in Woodbridge.

When the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers meet in Super Bowl 47, several players will be familiar to the Virginian/DC area. The game, of course, is in New Orleans, but the Super Bowl reaches everywhere, including Woodbridge. Here's all the information you'll need to get the most out of the matchup, including local players to keep an eye on, television schedules and where to watch the game close to home. Look for Torrey Smith, a wide receiver for Baltimore who was born in Colonial Beach and graduated from Stafford High. (See Smith's bio here.)
