Woodbridge Senior High softball team loses three straight to reach a record of .500.
The Woodbridge Senior High School varsity softball team dropped three straight games last week and is now fourth in the Cardinal District. Despite the .500 record and the team's current slump, the Vikings have talented players at all positions and could be championship contenders if they only remained consistent with their efforts. Senior Lindsey Slover, starting pitcher and one of the team captains, showed signs of brilliance and composure as she pitched her way out of multiple bases-loaded situations against Gar-Field and Forest Park. She also had a fairly decent week at the plate, with the best day being against Stonewall Jackson when she hit three for four, walked once, and stole a base. Slover has committed to play at Ferrum College …

International Baccalaureate program prepares them for success on and off the court.
The official slogan of Gar-Field Senior High School is "School of Champions." It's a bold slogan. The numerous sport team banners that hang throughout the campus, though, are a testament to the athletic skill of past and present Gar-Field students. There's another bold slogan that Gar-Field could adopt, though: "School of Overachievers." Get daily and breaking news email updates from Woodbridge Patch by signing up for newsletters here. Many Prince William County parents are aware that Gar-Field is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school. A NY Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat.
Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly-priced equipment for…

Woodbridge defeats Potomac in 12 innings, 7-6
With a runner on second base in the bottom of the 12th inning against Potomac High School Thursday night, Woodbridge Senior High School senior Justin Petok stepped into the batter's box for the sixth time. The Panthers had just made their third pitching change of the night, so Petok settled into his stance and waited, unsure of what to expect. He swung through a fastball pitch and sat on an off-speed ball. Then, on the third pitch he made contact, which seemed to catch Potomac off-guard. The ground ball skimmed across the mound—barely missing the glove of pitcher Drew Bringvel—into center field, which brought Chase Upham across home plate for the walk-off win and coach Jason Ritenour's 110th career victory. The three-hour marathon game …

They'll swim 5,000 meters on March 4 to raise money for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.
On March 4, 37 Shark Tank Racing Squad swimmers, along with other swimmers from local swim teams, will swim 5,000 meters to raise money and awareness for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The swim will take place at Woodbridge Sport & Health from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. "The swimmers range in age from 8 to 22 and most live in the greater Fairfax area," coach Patty Friedman said. "The children have learned facts about Breast Cancer and are spreading the word, taking general donations and pledges per lap. At the present time, their goal is to raise $7000. Team Shark Tank has their own fundraising page for online donations and information." Last year, the Shark Tank Racing Squad raised $6500 at the same event. Friedman herself walks in the annual …
Zach Fong joins 30-point club
Trailing 42-36 in the third quarter of the Northwest regional championship game, the Osbourn players fought for rebounding position as a failed alley-oop pass by Gar-Field smacked the backboard. Indians' senior Dave Bailey gained control of the ball after it touched the hands of three different players, and as he raised his head to find a teammate, he saw Zach Fong standing all alone. Bailey threw a quick pass to Fong who without hesitation tossed up an NBA-range three-point shot—four feet behind the top of the key. The ball bounced around inside the rim before falling through the net, and Fong smiled. Seventy-five seconds later Fong made his seventh three-pointer of the night which ignited the Gar-Field fans with confidence. “When he hit …
