Woodbridge Church Delivers Food To Local Elementary Schools

Church volunteers and West Springfield High School swimmers assembled and delivered the donations.

Volunteers with St. Paul United Methodist Church of Woodbridge delivered more than 550 bags of food Wednesday to local elementary schools.

The bags were assembled Dec. 15 by the Children and Youth Ministries of St. Paul and the J-Connection Youth Ministry, in addition to their families and volunteers from the Woodbridge Senior High School swim team.

On Wednesday, the bags were delivered  by truckload to five local elementary schools, where they will be distributed by staff members to the children on the free and reduced lunch programs.

"This food will sustain the families over the two-week winter break," said Amy Phillips, the church's director of youth ministries.

Food for the bags came from donations from the local community, including neighborhood food drives as well as donations from Wegman's and Food Lion grocery stores. Funds raised from the St. Paul Pumpkin Patch in October also were used to help fill the bags.

"This is a great project allowing our young people to be a part of giving to their local community," Phillips said.
