Searching for a New Principal

The Prince William County Public School system is in the process of finding a replacement for Hylton High School Principal Carolyn Custard.

With Principal Carolyn Custard leaving the school after this year, the Prince William County public school system is seeking her replacement.

Custard said that Michael Mulgrew, Prince William County associate superintendent for high schools, came to the school to speak with anyone interested about the qualifications they would like to see in a principal.

As with any employer, the school system will advertise the job and screen applicants through its Human Resources department, said spokesman Ken Blackstone.

The county will assemble an interview panel from the school, made up of teachers, administrators, and at least one student and one parent. After the county screens candidates, they will be sent before the panel, which will send its recommendations back to the county’s central office.

Blackstone could give a timeline for the process, but said that since it is not unusual for several principal positions to open each year, the Human Resources department is very familiar with the process.

Hylton Assistant Principal Brenda Byrd has been at the school for 19 years, through all three of the school’s principals. “It’s always difficult making change, transitioning to a new principal,” Byrd said.

Byrd expressed confidence that the transition would be smooth. “The central office has a good feel for what we need here at Hylton High School,” she said. “I think they will bring in someone who will be a good fit.”
