'Pennies From Heaven' For Sandy Victims

St. Thomas Aquinas Regional School students raised $1,535 for New York students suffering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

The students at St. Thomas Aquinas Regional School in Woodbridge, Virginia recently held a “Penny War,” which raised $1,535.28 for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The children wanted to help those who suffered the heaviest losses in New York and New Jersey.

The money they raised will be sent to St. Rose of Lima Catholic School in Rockaway, New York, which only recently re-opened its doors to students. St. Rose of Lima Catholic School is now serving breakfast to students, heating the school by heating oil and running only on generators.

A Penny War is a competition between the boys and girls at St. Thomas Aquinas Regional School to determine who can raise more money. Both girls and boys placed pennies in their respective jar toward their team total, and put silver coins or paper bills in the opposing jar, which counted against the totals. Competition was fierce as students stood in lines before school and during lunch to fill both jars, but the girls prevailed in the end. The girls celebrated their victory by having an out of uniform day.
