Stewart Re-elected County Chairman

The Republican victory party sponsored by Chairman Corey Stewart was filled with cheers as the results trickled in.

People want officials who will get the job done and not haggle over political ideologies, said Corey Stewart, newly re-elected Chairman of the Board of County Supervisors at his victory party Tuesday night.

Voters came out because they knew “we can put politics aside and work as a board,” he said.

Stewart stood up at 10:40 p.m. and told an enthusiastic gathering that he had just received a concession from his opponent, Babur Lateef. Stewart’s phone rang right then and he pulled it out quipping, “Maybe that’s my other opponent,” referring to Independent John Gray who was also running for Chairman.

He thanked the state delegates who were there, including 51st District Delegate Rich Anderson, saying that the county government works because of a strong cooperation with state government.

Stewart’s sponsored party was also home to many other celebrating Republicans who cheered over results on their smart phones before they even showed up on the big screen.

Lisa Bell, who ran for re-election on the School Board in the democratic Neabsco district, kept bringing her phone up to her mother with new results. “She didn’t just say she’s got it,” her mother, Virginia Miller, winked. “She’s waiting for one more precinct.” But they were all smiles.

Stewart ended the night by reminding the crowd that they must not allow division to creep in and weaken their party. “This is a great night, but we need to stay together,” he said.

With 76 out of 77 precincts reporting, Corey Stewart had 31,478 votes (58 percent), Babur Lateef 14,723 (27 percent),  John Gray 7,823 (14 percent), and there were 105 write ins.
