Commuters Preparing for Changes

Commuters parking at the Potomac Mills lot react on the last weekday before the lot is reduced to 275 spaces.

With commuter parking spaces at Potomac Mills Mall set to be effective Monday, Feb. 14, commuters at the lot on Friday were making plans for how to deal with the reduction when they make their morning commute on Monday.

Jolene Marshall said she is going to simply wake up earlier than usual and try to make it to the lot before the 275 spaces are gone. "This week I started getting here at 5:48," she said. If she doesn't make it before the lot is filled, she said she will probably drive to the Horner Road commuter lot or try to pick up slugs and drive to work.

Derrick Burton pointed to a line marking off the new smaller portion of the lot reserved for commuters. "It's bad, it's real bad," he said. Burton said that area was filled by 6:40 on Friday morning. He will try to arrive by 6:20 on Monday, 20 minutes earlier than usual. If he can't get a spot on Monday, he will have to go to a different parking lot or start driving to work earlier.

Charles Hickson said he will go to the slug line at the old site of Hechinger's store near the intersection of Old Bridge Road and Gordon Boulevard. Ben Addo said he will leave earlier and try the Horner Road parking lot, although he said it is usually filled by 6:30 each morning. "If I'm not there by 6:30, I'm just going to drive in," Addo said.
