Budget Error Misses $5 Million in Staff Pay at Prince William County

It's back to crunching numbers for county to account for payroll bill.

budget typo has Prince William County officials weighing options to find an unaccounted for $5 million in staff pay. 

"When preparing for the FY2014 budget, a data entry error caused the incorrect payroll data to be extracted," according to a county release. "As a result, the Payroll Budget is understated by $5 million for FY2014." 

The Board of County Supervisors will hear a report on the issue at the July 16 meeting.

Board Chairman Corey Stewart (R-At Large) told the Washington Post that Prince William County has a several options beyond cutting $5 million out of the $966.5 million budget.

“We need to make sure we fix the problem instead of affixing blame,” Stewart told the Post.
