Anderson Proposes Closed Primaries

Delegate Rich Anderson opposes the Republican Party of Virginia's planned loyalty oath for the primary election and says he will submit a bill to restrict primaries by party affiliation.

Virginia Del. Rich Anderson joined Gov. Bob McDonnell on Thursday in opposing the Republican Party of Virgina's plans to require a loyalty oath for voters participating in the March presidential primary.

Anderson said he has heard concerns from many citizens about the oath requirement, and he agreed. "I believe that this provision cannot be enforced and that it has the unintended potential for chilling Republican participation in the March presidential primary," Anderson said.

Republican Party leadership is revisiting their plans to require the oath, the Washington Post reported.

Anderson said that he understood the desire to ensure that only Republicans would vote, and had drafted legislation to establish voter registration in Virginia by political party affiliation. He said he will submit the legislation to the Clerk of the House of Delegates in the next several days.
