Murder Charges Dropped After Woman Pleads Guilty to Obstruction

A woman initially charged with the 2011 murder of a relative at the River Run senior apartments in Dale City will walk free after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice. 

Prince William County Circuit Court Judge William Hamblen on Monday sentenced Jung Ok Jun, of Fresh Meadows, NY, to 180 days, but all time is suspended. She will not serve any further jail time, but must complete a year's probation. Jung Ok Jun was initially charged with murder in , but prosecutors amended the charge to the misdemeanor on Monday. 

Jung Ok Jun did not speak at the hearing, other than to say and spell her name. Her husband, Jung Min Jun, is scheduled to stand trial on Nov. 26 for allegedly murdering Hur. Her son, Ho Young Jun, is also scheduled to go on trial next week on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. 

According to a police search warrant filed in Prince William County Circuit Court in March 2012, investigators believe that Jung Min Jun strangled Hur, his brother-in-law, to death on Sept. 1 for insurance money. 

Ho Young Jun, the son of Jung Min Jun and Jung Ok Jun, purchased a $1 million policy on Hur's life through the insurance company NY Life—with the understanding that the primary beneficiary would be Hur's widow. But not long afterward, he submitted a form, without Hur's knowledge, that made him the sole beneficiary. 

Ho Young Jun was making $3,000 a month, but paying $2,500 for the insurance policy, according to the warrant signed by Detective Joseph Medawar. Five days after the murder, Ho Young Jun contacted NY Life and attempted to collect the $1 million policy, but the company rejected the claim due to the murder investigation, according to the warrant. 

Police arrested Jung Min Jun at Newark International Airport on Sept. 9, 2011, as he was trying to board a flight to Beijing. The other two were arrested around the same time.
