The suspect broke open the front door before he assaulted the victim, Prince William County Police said.

A man broke into a Woodbridge woman's home and assaulted her Wednesday, Prince William County Police said.

Shannon Patrick McLaughlin, 35, of no fixed address, is charged with burglary with intent to commit assault and domestic assault and battery.

Police responded at 8:43 p.m. to the 4500 block of Sparrow Court, where the 43-year-old victim told officers that McLaughlin had forced his way into the home by breaking the front door. McLaughlin, who was acquainted with the victim, "confronted the victim and assaulted her," police spokesman Officer Jonathan Perok said in a press release.

The woman reported minor injuries. After an investigation, police arrested McLaughlin. He is held without bond pending his court date.
