Gun Goes Off During Family Fight

The bullet did not strike either man, police said.

Two family members face charges after a gun went off while they were allegedly fighting, Prince William County Police said. 

Stephen Allen Witt, 33, of Londonderry Court in Dale City, is charged with reckless handling of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and assault and battery. Damon Barry Witt, 37, of the same residence, is charged with unlawful wounding. 

"Both accused individuals, who are family members, became involved in a verbal altercation which escalated physically," Officer Jonathan Perok, a spokesman for the Prince William County Police Department, said in a press release.

Police responded on Wednesday at 2:10 p.m. for a report of a fight. During the fight, a gun in the possession of Stephen Witt went off, Perok said, but no one was struck. Minor injuries were reported. 

Damon Witt left the residence before the police arrived, but officers found him nearby. He was held on a $2,500 secured bond. Stephen Witt was held without bond.
