Obituary: Michael F. Zito, 98, of Woodbridge

World War II veteran will be buried at Quantico National Cemetery.

Michael F. Zito, age 98 of Woodbridge, VA formerly of New Haven, Connecticut passed away on Monday, September 9, 2013 at his daughter’s home where he had lived for eighteen years.


He was born to Italian immigrant parents, the late Francesco and Chiara Zito, on April 2, 1915 in New Haven, Connecticut. One of the “Last Great Generation,” he was a WWII Veteran who was a private in the US Army Infantry and fought three years in Italy until he was wounded and subsequently honorably discharged. He then worked 39 years as a machinist for the Winchester Arms Company in New Haven and retired in 1979.

In 1991, he relocated to VA with his wife, Beatrice Wick Zito, who was the love of his life. After 56 beautiful years together, Beatrice passed in 1995 at which time he went to live with his daughter’s family.

Michael loved and lived life to the fullest with a great sense of humor. He was a lover of music, classic cinema, an avid reader and history buff. He had an amazing gift in art and appreciated all things Italian, though he was an American patriot from head to toe. Most of all, he was an adored father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, the very center of the family.

He is survived by his loving daughter Clare Herce and her husband Emeterio. He is also survived by grandson Michael Herce and wife Iole; grandson David Herce and wife Chailynn; granddaughter Clarita Herce; great grandchildren Luca, Lily and Clara Herce; one sibling Pearl Aguirre of CA and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Beatrice; Siblings Thomas Zito, Fred Zito, Angelina Zito, Marie Robin and John Zito.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 PM Tuesday, September 17th at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd, Dale City VA 22193. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30AM Wednesday, September 18th at Holy Family Catholic Church, 14160 Ferndale Rd., Dale City VA 22193.  Followed by burial with military honors at Quantico National Cemetery.
