While the world turns to London next week for the start of the Olympic Games, Northern Virginia seniors will turn their attention to September and Arlington, where 700 adults from 50-94 will compete in such competitions as Wii Bowling, Pickleball, Miniature Golf, Yo-Yo Tricks and Frisbee Throw, along with more traditional track and field, swimming and diving events during the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics games Sept. 15-26.
“While gold medals are great, living healthy longer is one of our goals, along with the camaraderie and friendships that develop among the participants, their families and friends,” said Northern Virginia Senior Olympics Committee Chairman, Jack Hobbs, who moved to the Continuing Care Retirement Community of last year with his wife Dona from the Bailey’s Crossroads area. Westminster at Lake Ridge is a sponsor of the games.
This year’s competitors include a contingent of residents and staff from Westminster at Lake Ridge that will be participating in Wii Bowling, a 3 mile walk, Scrabble, as well as volunteering at the games.
“I haven’t been practicing, but I bowled for years,” shares Betty Seybold, 73 who moved to Westminster at Lake Ridge five years ago from Pittsburgh. “I go for the fun of it and end up with pretty good scores.”
