Update: Weakened Irene Hits North Carolina

The chance for tropical storm conditions in Prince William County is slightly lower than it was yesterday.

Hurricane Irene weakened to a large Category 1 hurricane before hitting the coast of North Carolina Saturday morning, but still brought 80 mph winds with gusts as high as 94 mps, according to the Weather Channel.

The National Weather Service in Baltimore and Washington said the D.C. area is still under a tropical storm warning, though the chances for tropical storm conditions are 45 percent, lowered from 65 percent earlier. At 6 a.m., the center of the storm was about 330 miles south of Washington, D.C. and moving north-northeast at about 14 mph.

Residents are still urged to before the storm.
