The Board of County Supervisors began the process of redistricting Tuesday, voting unanimously to adopt a set of criteria and timing for the redistricting process and schedule a public hearing on April 5.

Tracy Gordon of the county Office of Executive Management presented the board with the staff recommendations for the process.

The magisterial districts are required to be equal in population, within plus or minus 5 percent of the ideal district population. With western districts seeing the most population growth in the last 10 years and eastern districts growing at a much slower rate, district lines are likely to shift significantly.

Manassas City Police say the man suspected of stealing $6,000 worth of watches from Ashby Jewelers in Old Town was caught in Maryland Wednesday.

The man identified by police as Haywood Purnell, Jr., was apprehended in Prince George's County in Maryland.

The Manassas Park City Schools School Board held a special meeting Monday evening to discuss the superintendent's proposed $35.7 million budget for the 2011-12 school year. At the beginning of the meeting, the board opened the floor  to community members so they could voice their opinions about the budget.

Of the $35.7 million budget, $29.6 million would cover operating costs, $4.7 million debt services, $6 million to a medical trust for retirees who converted their unused sick leave and $1.3 million will cover food service costs.
