Low-cost SHARE food orders accepted through Oct. 14

MANASSAS, Va. – You have until 5 p.m. Oct. 14 to place your SHARE food order for October with House of Mercy, a nonprofit humanitarian organization which joined SHARE’s network this year to bring nutritious food at low cost to local families.

As part of SHARE’s nonprofit food network, the House of Mercy offers the food packages at about half the price families would pay in a grocery store.

Anyone can buy the packages, which range in price from $14 to $32 depending on the order. A $2 fuel surcharge is also added to the price of each package to cover transportation costs. The House of Mercy receives no profit from the sales.

SHARE (Self Help And Resource Exchange) orders for October must be picked up on Saturday, Oct. 26, between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at the House of Mercy, located at 8170 Flannery Court in Manassas. The organization offers a different menu each month.

The October menu includes four packages: the “Value Package,” “Beef Lovers,” “Pasta Lovers” and “Veggie Lovers.”

The “Value Package,” $20, includes 1 pound each of lentils, turkey burgers and boneless ham steak (frozen); 1.6 pounds of chicken drumsticks; 12 ounces of bean and cheese quesadillas; 1 dozen fresh eggs; fresh potatoes and 7 or more pounds of seasonal produce.

“Beef Lovers,” $20, contains 10 5.5-ounce portions of frozen bacon-wrapped sirloin. “Pasta Lovers,” also $20, includes enough pasta for seven meals: stuffed shells, stuffed manicotti, tri-color tortellini, ravioli, sun-dried tomato-stuffed ziti, spinach- and cheese-stuffed ziti, and potato and cheddar pierogies.

“Veggie Lovers,” $14, consists of 3 pounds of white potatoes, 2 pounds each of lentils and brown rice, 1 pound of yellow split peas, 1 dozen eggs and 8 to 10 pounds of fresh seasonal produce.

Unless paying by credit or debit card, you must place your SHARE order in person at the House of Mercy, which accepts Visa, MasterCard and Discover, cash, food stamps, EBT and money orders. No checks are accepted.

For more information or to order, call 703-659-1636 or email help@houseofmercyva.org. SHARE is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Washington.
