Weekend Planner: Living History, S’mores, and Canoe Tours

Want ideas for how to get out of the house this weekend? Dale City Patch is here to help with your weekend planner.

Why Go: Have your pick of reliving various aspects of history! Enjoy sword-fighting demonstrations by Have Blade Will Travel, lace-making demonstrations from the Piedmont Lace Guild, artifacts and combat uniforms from the National Museum of the Marine Corps, artifacts from the American Wartime Museum, colonial games from Rippon Lodge, and a passport and stamp from the Virginia Time Traveler. At various times throughout the day, there will be a pirate school, Civil War cavalry horse and owner, four-part harmony period music, and more!

Why Go: Do you and your family love searching for treasures? Families are invited to Lake Ridge Park to find all of the essential ingredients to make s'mores, then cook them over a campfire. This is a great opportunity to learn the basics of geocaching while enjoying a tasty treat as a family.

Pricing: $25 fee per family of four and $5 for each additional person.

 Where/When: , 2001 Daniel K Ludwig Dr, Saturday July 16, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why Go: It was expected of women who lived during the Colonial and Civil eras to be skilled at sewing and embroidery, so head over the Leesylvania State Park Visitor Center and see some Colonial style samplers and try out cross stitching to see if you are up to par with the women of the past. This is appropriate for ages 4 and up.

Pricing:  $2 per person or $6 per family.

Where/When: , 12350 Cotton Mill Dr, Saturday July 16, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Why Go: Need volunteer hours? Come out to Lake Ridge Park every 3rd Saturday of the month and spend the morning at the park. There will be indoor and outdoor projects to clean up the parks and facilities. Be sure to call ahead to learn about receiving community service hours for various programs, although reservations are not required to volunteer.

Pricing: Free.

 Where/When: , 2001 Daniel K Ludwig Dr, Saturday July 16, 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Why Go: Come join a ranger for a guided canoe tour. Explore Powell's Creek and enjoy the wildlife and marsh plants while testing your canoe skills. Participants must register in the Visitors Center before the tour.

 Pricing: $9 per person or $6 for reserved groups of four or more.
