The Great Escape: Riding the Rails

Summer Festival Fun

Eager for summer festival food and fun? Check out Manassas’ 17th Annual Heritage Railway Festival this Saturday, June 4th from 10am to 4pm near the Manassas Train Depot. The festival features food, vendors, kids’ rides, and much more. As a tribute to the railway history of the area, tickets will be available to ride the VRE to Clifton and back. Local organizations, including LEGO train clubs, display model trains that all ages will enjoy.

Several performances will be featured as well as a selection of music, dance and martial arts on the kids’ stage. The festival will also have a Civil War living history exhibitions that will feature both Union and Confederate re-enactors, as well as drill demonstrations and sutlers selling their fares on the lawn. Free parking and admission is provided. For more information, visit VisitManassas.org.

If the heat becomes too much, head inside to enjoy some lunch at Okra’s, a local Cajun restaurant that offers lots of flavor with their air conditioning. Try one of their po’boy or muffeletta sandwiches for a taste of authentic New Orleans. For more information and a full menu, visit their website.

Need a babysitter? Check bulletin boards (both virtual and actual) in your neighborhood for experienced caretakers. Often, churches, grocery stores, and community newsletters will post information about babysitters. The best recommendations are those from someone you know, so be sure to ask around for a quality sitter.
