The Great Escape: Home Town Vacation

A mini staycation.

It’s hotter than hot outside right now. If you’re still looking for an escape from the heat and summer blues, sometimes it’s best to think like a tourist.

Really.

Think of your hometown (and its surrounding area) as a vacation destination. If you vacationed here, what would you do? Check for review websites such as the Patch directoryYelp, Prince William County Moms, or Visit Prince William County to find new restaurants, attractions, or events in your area. The Prince William Park Authority lists recreation centers, waterparks, and other natural attractions.

Don’t forget about D.C. itself. It’s easy to ignore the capital city because it’s so close, but it offers so much more than the familiar attractions. Take the VRE or metro into the city and explore that last Smithsonian museum you still haven’t visited. Go in after sunset and explore the monuments as they’re newly beautiful at night. Shop at Eastern Market’s Flea Market or catch an independent film (with an espresso bar and gourmet goodies) at E Street Cinema. Ask your local friends where they like to eat or shop in the city.

To take full advantage of your home, turn off the computer and find small ways to make it special. Maybe have a couple of late movie nights with the whole family or ignore normal chores for a few days. With a little imagination and lots of air conditioning, a mini escape is easier than you might think.

Need a budget-friendly babysitter? Try swapping with another local mom. If you want an evening out one week, ask if she would watch your kids if you would trade the next week. Be sure to set realistic expectations and discuss specifics, but you may find a long term solution that can benefit both families.
