The Global Alliance for Rabies Control reports that most animal rabies occurs among wildlife, with almost 70,000 animal rabies cases in the country each year.

The Prince William County Police Department offered several tips to keep you, your children, and your pets safe from rabies:

  • Vaccinate all dogs, cats and ferrets against rabies.
  • Remind your children never to touch strange animals.
  • Don't leave garbage or pet food outside. It may attract animals.
  • Keep your distance when observing wildlife.
  • Don't let your pets roam free.
