Prince William Roaring Lions Yard Sale

The Prince William Roaring Lions club organized a yard sale fundraiser on Saturday.

Local residents were buying and selling household possessions at a yard sale in the Arc of Greater Prince William parking lot on Saturday, but it wasn’t just about bartering for a good deal. The yard sale was a fundraiser for the Prince William Roaring Lions, one of only a few Lions International clubs in the world specifically for people with developmental disabilities.

Nearly a year after the formation of the Prince William Roaring Lions, the group has worked through the process of running monthly meetings with its own officers, and is branching out into finding ways to help the community.

One of the group’s main focuses is on helping people in the blind community. The Roaring Lions club has already participated in two “White Cane” fundraiser events to help the blind, and contributed $200 of club funds toward a PediaVision machine to help diagnose young children with vision problems.

Lake Ridge Lions member Tony Reyes, who helped form the Roaring Lions, said the yard sale had nine tables, with the setup fee for each table going toward the Roaring Lions club funds to be used to help the community. Reyes said the sale attracted a good amount of attention from the community. “I think everyone’s been pretty happy with the sales,” he said.

Rose Jordan, the mother of a member of the Roaring Lions, came up with the idea for the yard sale as a way for the club members to raise funds and interact with the community.

Paul and Nora Perada, whose daughter Nichole Vasquez is a member of the Roaring Lions, had a large selection of items for sale, from video games to a glass-domed mantle clock. The couple said they wanted to support the group that has given their daughter an opportunity to feel like part of the community. “My daughter’s just bloomed since becoming part of this,” Paul said.
