Prince William County Housing Voucher Waiting List Opens
Applications will be accepted for the low income rental assistance program
Application for the waiting list for Housing Choice Vouchers begins Saturday and will continue through Friday, December 17.
The Housing Choice Voucher program is a form of rental assistance for low and very low income families funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and administered in Prince William County by the Office of Housing and Community Development.
A family who receives a voucher is responsible to find suitable housing that meets the health and safety standards of HUD and whose owner agrees to rent under the HCV program. OHCD pays the owner a direct subsidy, and the family renting the home is responsible to pay the difference between the amount of the voucher and the total rent charged by the owner.
Families who apply will go through an eligibility verification process with OHCD. If they are determined to be eligible, they will be added to a waiting list. They will receive a voucher once their name is reached on the waiting list.
According to HUD, eligibility is based on the total annual gross income and family size, and is limited to U.S. citizens and certain non-citizens who have eligible immigration status. In general, the family's income may not exceed 50 percent of the median income for the area in which the family lives.
OHCD encourages applicants to apply online to avoid waiting in long lines or risking having their application lost in the mail.
